Zoo Excursion

Students from 3.3 and 6.4 attended 'Zoo Fest' at Perth Zoo in November. The children learnt about conservation of western ring tailed possums, the white rhinoceros, and even got to touch some scaly friends.

Thankyou to Mrs Jordan, Mrs Sueter, Mrs Dolting and Mrs B for helping out on the day. It was a fantastic experience for all involved.

Gingerbread House Making

Rooms 4.1 and 4.4 have made some fantastic gingerbread houses.  A messy, but fun time was had by all the students.

They sure do look delicious.

Principal’s Report

Our School Vision - One team, one mission, striving to provide a safe and effective learning environment where every child is supported to reach their potential.

Dear School Community,

2024 has been a very busy year at Middle Swan PS. Students and Staff have all worked hard and tried their best to ensure every child is reaching their potential. This has been clear in our amazing NAPLAN results where we have punched above our weight across the board. Both Year 3 and 5 students collectively outperformed like schools and far better than school expected to do better than us.

School Open Afternoon

There was a wonderful turn out to our Open afternoon in week 8. Thank you to all of you who attended, and shared with your child, their learning journey and work over 2024. No doubt the cuddly animals, ice creams and sausage sizzle were a hit too but we know how much your children love it when you come to their school.

The sausage sizzle raised $238 which will go straight towards purchasing much needed new books for the library.

2025 Swimming Lessons Schedule

The school does not select the term or weeks that lessons are run. That part is organised by the WA School of Swimming. In addition, next year we will be limited to session sizes of 30 students in the junior primary. That means there will be more bus runs and at a cost to parents. We will endeavour to access more Access to all Areas vouchers in 2025 for families who are finding it difficult to pay for the full cost. The exact cost for term 2 swimming lessons will be sent out to parents early in the new year. Please note the scheduled lessons for 2025.

  • Pre-primary to year 3 – Week 5 and 6, Term 2
  • Year 4-6 -– week 4 Term 4

6 Seasons Poles

The last touches have been made to our beautiful 6 seasons pole around the yarning circle. Mrs Wong and all the contributing students have done a beautiful job in acknowledging our indigenous people’s culture and making the school culturally inclusive. It has been 6 months in the making but it has been worth it.

Thank you everyone.

Preparing for Bush Fires

Every year the school prepares a plan in case of fire. That plan includes practising evacuation as a whole school which we do at least once a term. Please note the following points in the case of a genuine fire evacuation scenario.

Bushfire Season 2024 - 2025

Please keep in mind the following points if we need to evacuate to a safer place.

  1. Parents will be contacted via the school app or texted via SMS. Please ensure you have access to the school app tool and your details are correct at the front office.
  2. Parents are not to ring the school at the time of evacuation. Phone lines are kept free for emergency services and staff will be busy moving children off site.
  3. Parents are not to collect students during an evacuation procedure.

We wish all our students and their families a wonderfully safe summer holiday. Take care of yourselves and your families.

Kind regards

Spellathon

This term we are running a Spellathon again to raise funds and increase students’ knowledge of words they need to spell. The competition will run Monday 18 November but sponsorship forms should have been sent home already. Please support our school to improve students spelling and buy more books and sponsor your child with their endeavours.

All funds raised will go towards the ongoing upgrade of the Library – in particular purchasing of new books. Many students are enjoying using the library at lunchtimes especially now it has new furniture. Last Spellathon we raised $8000 dollars so that is our challenge this time.

Art Awards

Congratulations to the following students who have recently won awards at the Darlington Art Festival.

Then two more students won awards at the Mundaring Art Environment Project. Congratulations to  Althea Apor Dudula  and Lavinia Buzdugan who were selected as City of Swan winners. Thank you  Mrs Wong  for providing our students with the opportunity for success.

Open Classrooms Afternoon

We are looking forward to the Open Classrooms Afternoon from 2.30 – 4.00 on Wednesday 27 November. Every classroom will be open for parents and carers to view work their child has completed over the year. You will also be able to make a meeting time for another time with the class teacher, if required.

In addition, there will be a sausage sizzle running in the undercover from 3.00pm. So remember to bring your coins for a $3.00 sausage and sauce.

Contributions and Personal Items

You should receive your Contributions and Personal Items list in the immediate future. Please note that for 2025 we will be working through Office Works rather than Campion which will make it a lot easier and handy in Midland

School Board – We need you.

As some school members have done their 2 years or are vacating their position, we are now looking for new school board members for 2025. If you would like to know more about the workings of a school and how decisions are made, being a board member may interest you. In addition, if you know someone who would be a great representative for the school community you can also nominate them. There are at least 2 positions empty so you might even join with a friend. Please indicate your interest by ringing the front office or drop in to  leave your name and number.

Uniforms

Recently the board met to discuss dress standards at the school. One area in particular has been added to the parent handbook. Please note that nail polish and fake nails are not part of the school’s dress code. Fake nails are also a risk in the playground and when playing sport. Please read below.

General

  • Jewellery - For safety and security reasons this should be kept to a minimum. Studs orSleepers in ears are permitted, however, necklaces create a safety risk during sport and are strongly discouraged.
  • Make-up is not permitted including lipstick, mascara, eye shadow and glitter. (Students are asked to remove make-up at the start of the day if required)
  • Fake nails and polish are not permitted – particularly for safety reasons in the playground and hygiene, as nails harbour germs.
  • Hair - A neatly maintained haircut is a school community expectation.
  • Non-conventional haircuts or colourful dyes are not part of the accepted standard of dress. Hair should be effectively and firmly tied up to avoid catching hair louse, if longer than shoulder length.  Loose hair is a risk for nits.
  • Hats - School policy requires students to wear a bucket hat with school logo during PE, Sport, Recess and Lunch all year.

School Development Day

This Friday is the end of term three and every child and staff member have earned a well-deserved, rest for 2 weeks. Please note that students come back to school on Monday 7 October. Term Four’s school development day will be on Monday 4 November so that will be a long weekend for students.

Vac Swim

It is alarming that some children struggle to reach a reasonable level of water proficiency by the time they leave primary school. The recent swimming lessons for Year 3-6 saw many students make progress to the next stage, however swimming levels achieved tended to  be low. We were pleased to offer Access All Areas vouchers to many families to ensure that most students attended lessons this term.

This year the government is offering free swimming lessons and entry in December and January. Don’t miss out this opportunity to ensure your child learns to swim; a ‘life saving’ skill.

Pre Primary to Year 3 students will have swimming lessons in weeks three and four next term. Please return permission forms and monies before Friday week 1 next term.

Dental Services

Recently the Child Parent Centre (CPC) has organised students from the Dental School of UWA to promote dental health in our school. As a result every child will be given a free dental package. The partnership between the CPC and the UWA Dental School will also provide screening services and possible free dental surgery if required, including transport to and from PCH. Middle Swan PS is very lucky to be part of this valuable partnership.

2024 NAPLAN

NAPLAN data provides us with valuable information about how we are going as a school. This year’s NAPLAN results were wonderful. MSPS performed better than like schools and better than expected based on system data.  Our school is ‘punching above its weight’ due to the explicit teaching style we have adopted over the last 6 years and the whole school texts that you buy for your child at the beginning of each year.  Your child’s academic progress and achievement is our priority, and it is very gratifying to see that we are proving to be a successful school. You should feel confident and pleased that your child is been provided with every opportunity to succeed, well and truly reflecting our school vision and priorities.

The graph above demonstrates how we have done better than expected in Year 3 Reading.  A far greater number of students are at the ‘exceeding’ proficiency level. And while we always expect there to be students who need additional support  there aren’t the number of students expected at that proficiency level.

The Numeracy graph is a similar story. Students who are performing at the ‘strong’ level of proficiency are far greater in number than expected.

Fathers Day Breakfast

Plans are well underway for the week 7 Wednesday Breakfast for students and their fathers. We have sort donations from local businesses and staff are donating to the raffle that will run across the breakfast. We are encouraging everyone to wear their beanies to fit in with the menu of a sausage sizzle and baked bean/ spaghetti toasties.

Pride in our school – Excellence and Respect

Last week 6.4 and 3.3 classes visited the Fremantle Museum and Old Jail as a result of the HASS lessons they had completed. Apparently, our students were fabulous ambassadors for the school and demonstrated excellence and respect where ever they went. The guides at the museum and jail went out of their way to comment on how well behaved our students were and how genuinely interested and engaged they were in the excursion. In fact, because of their behaviour the excursion sites were able to provide experiences to our students that were not always available.  We are very proud of our MSPS ambassadors.

Further to that, last week two of our school leaders were seen helping an elderly member of the community who was struggling to get across the street with a walker and shopping. How kind were Harley Brown and Malakai Clinch? You are well deserving of your leadership roles at Middle Swan PS. It was heart warming to have that brought to our attention.

Change of SDD dates

Usually, every first Monday of the term is a school development day when students do not attend. In term 3 the first Monday 15 July is a normal school development day. However, the first Monday in term 4 will be a normal school day and students will attend.

To meet availability of dates for staff professional learning we will hold the term 4 school development date in week 5 on Monday 4 November.

Canteen

Behind the scenes we have been investigating the possibility of a canteen service again. And – we are thrilled to have been able to find a service that will provide the school with canteen, 2 days a week. Starting next term every Thursday and Friday students will be able to order their lunch and purchase morning tea. The new service is called A1 Catering who also provides canteen services in other local schools. We will provide menu details and ordering methods in week 1 next term.

Swimming Lessons

Please note that Year 3 swimming sessions will be split across both terms this year because we have split classes in some groups.  In term 3 Mrs Georgiou’s year 3s will participate in the Year 4-6 lessons.  In term 4 the remaining Year 3s in 3.4 and 3.2 will complete their lessons with the PP – Year 2.

PJ Day

We have planned some fun for early next term. On Friday the 26 July we will hold a PJ day when everyone can come to school dressed warmly in their snuggly PJs and dressing gowns. Please note that if children wear slippers as well, please ensure they bring normal school shoes for playing in at recess and lunch. That Friday is also an ‘Eagle Cup’ day so any year 5 and 6s who are involved will need to bring sport clothes to change in to before their games.

Cygnets 3-year-old Programme

Due to the lack of numbers attending the Cygnets program in recent times we have postponed the program until further notice. If you are interested in attending the 2-hour program for pre Kindy children, on a Thursday morning, please leave your name at the school’s front office.

Kind regards

Food Bank

On Wednesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 29th, Room 6.4 and Room 3.3 were visited by the Foodbank WA team for the nom! Schools program. Both classes learnt about healthy eating, did fun nutrition education activities, and cooked up a storm! Across both days, room 6.4 and 3.3 prepared 16 new, delicious recipes using ingredients from the five food groups, and at the end of their visits the classes sat down to feast on a sample of everything they cooked. Some crowd favourites included Cheesy Pasta Blast, Rainbow Salad, Coco Loco Balls, and Noodle Ninja Mince (YUM)!!!

Students were given recipe books to use at home, and we are looking forward to what they cook next with their awesome cooking skills!

Fremantle Prison and Shipwreck Museum Excursion

On Thursday 20th June, Room 3.3 and 6.4 headed off to Fremantle for an excursion. We had a tour of Fremantle Prison where we had a look at the small cells the convicts once lived in, walked Moondye Joe’s escape path and even got to experience being in a dark solitary confinement cell ourselves.  After this we explored the WA Shipwrecks Museum, where we took a journey through Western Australia’s coast, first European encounters, and the riches of maritime trade. We even had a small play at the Esplanade Park and had a great time learning lots of new things in Fremantle.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Last week a group of year 1-6 students competed in the Interschool Athletics Carnival. It was a very special two days in which we placed second place overall as a school. We fell behind first place by a mere 14 points which was incredibly close! This is our highest placement in several years. Students should be very proud as are we, all of their efforts for our school. It was also a tremendous result individually as we received champion boy awards for years 3 and 6. Also runner up champion in year 6. A fantastic achievement.

Liam Moore was awarded year 3 champion boy.
Malakai Clinch awarded year 6 runner up boy.
Kearne Lewis was awarded year 6 champion boy.

Students put in the hard work in training, participated well showing good sportsmanship and valour. I couldn’t be prouder. Looking forward to what we can achieve as a school at our upcoming carnivals. Bring on Interschool Cross Country!

Cygnets 3-year-old programme

Cygnets is our program for 3-year-olds who will be starting Kindy in 2024. On Thursday mornings we have lots of fun in the Hub from 8:40-10:30. We have a story and learn a new song each week.  Recently we learnt 'Wheels on the Bus' and read 'Duck in a Truck.' We made egg carton buses, did some painting and other activities.  There is still room for more enrolments if your child is coming to Kindy next year.  Mrs Bedells

Kindy – Year 2 Farm Incursion

In Week 3 our Kindy to Year 2 students were lucky enough to attend a Farm Incursion through Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farm (WA East).

First, we were greeted by Farmer Chris and his sheep dog, ‘Oi’!  Farmer Chris spoke to us about some of the animals that live on his farm and what we use them for.  Then we got to go into the ‘farmyard’ and interact with the animals.  There were goats, sheep, chickens a goose and even a rabbit.

Students really enjoyed being able to pat and feed each animal as they listened to Farmer Chris talk about life on the farm.

At the end of the incursion, Farmer Chris showed us how to crack a stock whip!  It was SO loud!

We had a great time at the farm.

Swan View Senior High School – Open Night

Principal’s Report

Mother Day Breakfast

Thankyou to all of you who attended our breakfast last week. It was wonderful to see so many of you there and for the students to enjoy having you at school with them. We see the breakfast as an opportunity to build on the partnership, we share with you, in your child’s education and wellbeing.

There were many generous and kind donations made by the public to make the morning a success and to provide the vast number of raffle prizes that so many mothers were able to enjoy. Below is a list of donators. Thankyou to the following

  • The Hon Michelle Roberts MLA - $200
  • Bunnings -2x $50 vouchers
  • Stratton IGA - $100
  • Swan View IGA – numerous groceries
  • Woollies Midvale – numerous groceries
  • Morrison Compounding Pharmacy – raffle
  • Re Vamp Hair and Spa – Stratton – voucher
  • Swan View Domino’s Pizza -$50 voucher
  • Sandra Hayes – Raffle
  • Rainy Day Gifts – box and gift card
  • Therese Madaffari – towel set and pot glove
  • Claire Metcalfe – Scentsy Consultant – Scentsy was, cream and scent
  • Bella Baking – raffle – cake
  • Perth Forever Bouquets Gifts – Tiffany Schmid – bouquet
  • Hawaiian – 3 x $50.00 vouchers – community partnerships

And then of course there was the extra time and effort that when into planning and preparation by staff. The ladies on the breakfast working party were awesome and organised the large number of donations and sponsorship willingly and effectively, in their own time. And then of course to get staff at school by 6.00 o’clock in the morning to prepare the food is inspirational.  Thankyou.

Interschool Athletics

Congratulations to the wonderful performance by our competitors at last week’s carnival.

More than anything, their behaviour and sportsmanship was outstanding and really demonstrated our motto of Excellence and Respect.  We are so proud of you all.

Unwell Children

Thank you, parents and carers, for keeping your children at home when they exhibit symptoms or for being quick to pick them up when we ring. I remember feeling unwell in primary school and it was such a relief when my mum picked me up and I didn’t have to keep trying to be brave.

Often children seem fine in the morning and then quickly succumb. In such situations we know how awkward it can be when you are already at work. Making sure there are other people you can organise to pick up your child is vital. Please remember that if your child has any symptom don’t send them to school. That way they will recover more quickly, and others don’t get sick as well. This includes staff too.

Although the winter weather has not hit us yet there has been a wave of illness across the school. COVID, flu and gastro have been making their presence known in every class.  The current lack of relief teachers means that when a teacher is sick, we are forced to shut down a class and spread students out to other classes which interrupts learning programs.

Kind regards

Cygnets – 3 year old programme

Cygnets

Our 3-year-old Cygnets program commenced on Thursday 7th March this term. Cygnets is for children born between 1st July 2020 – 30th June 2021 who will enrol to come to our Kindy in 2025.

The sessions run 8:40-10:30am Thursday mornings at the Hub (Child Parent Centre Swan) in partnership with the school.  Each week children participate in interactive activities around a story book and nursery rhyme and parents stay with their children.

Cygnets is a successful way to transition children to kindy.

Carnaby Crusaders

On Friday, 6 March,  Dean McArthur from 'Carnaby Crusaders' installed an artificial black cockatoo nest in the nature play of TA6.  Middle Swan PS is right on the edge of Carnaby Cockatoo breeding grounds and it was just brilliant seeing the kids getting involved with the conservatorship of the species and talking about their experiences with the endangered bird. Fingers crossed we have a nest by August.

We also spotted a galah family in another tree. Dean noted galahs 'ringbark' a ring around the tree to mark their territory and interrupt snakes and lizards climbing up the tree.  Very cool stuff.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to our Champion Boy and Champion Girl for their year group and to the Runner Up Boy and Girl.  A top effort by you all.
